Abstract:

NEW MATERIAL:6-O-(2-Keto-L-gulonoyl)-L-ascorbic acid which is substantially free from 2-keto-L-gulonic acid.

USE: Prodrug of ascorbic acid which is absorbable from intestinal tracts. It is more soluble in lipid than ascorbic acid, as it has an ester bond, and readily hydrolyzed in artificial intestinal tracts to give ascorbic acid.

PREPARATION: In an organic solvent, the acid is allowed to act on 2-keto-L- gulonic acid or its ketal, than 6-O-(2-keto-L-gulonoyl)-L-ascorbic acid is separated and collected from the reaction mixture.
