NEW MATERIAL:A maleimide compound shown by formula I (R1WR4 and R1'WR4' are H, halogen or 1W4C alkyl).
EXAMPLE: N-{4-[α-(3-Hydroxyphenyl)-isopropyl]-phenyl}maleimide.
USE: Useful as a raw material for drugs, agricultural chemicals, dye and high polymers or an intermediate thereof. When the compound is copolymerized in a thermoplastic resin especially as a raw material for high polymer, the compound shows improving effects on heat resistance without lowering flexibility and is useful as a resin improver.
PREPARATION: An amine compound shown by formula II is reacted with maleic anhydride in the presence of an acidic catalyst in an aliphatic hydrocarbon, aromatic hydrocarbon, halogenated aliphatic hydrocarbon, halogenated aromatic hydrocarbon or a mixture thereof as a solvent by heating under reflux while removing formed water out of the system to give a compound shown by formula I.
