PURPOSE: To obtain a developed color extremely resembling a black color alone, by using a specific methine compound in a pressure-sensitive or thermal recording material.
CONSTITUTION: The methine compound used in a pressure-sensitive or thermal recording material is represented by formula (I) (wherein R1 is a lower alkyl group, and R2 and R3 are a hydrogen atom, a lower alkyl group or a benzyl group and may have a chlorine atom, a lower alkyl group, a lower alkoxy group or a cycloalkyl group as a substituent in its molecule and not a hydrogen atom at the same time). This methine compound is dissolved in phenylxylylethane to be dispersed in an aqueous solution containing a dispersant and a methylol melamine resin is added to the resulting solution to perform encapsulation while the treated solution is subsequently neutralized to obtain a microcapsule dispersion which is, in turn, mixed with an aqueous starch sizing solution and starch grains to obtain a dispersion. This dispersion is applied to fine paper to prepare upper paper which is, in turn, laminated to the coating surface of lower paper coated with a coupler dispersion and, when both papers are subjected to printing on a typewriter, a black or dark color is developed.
