NEW MATERIAL:A penicillanic acid shown by the formula I (R1 is H or lower alkyl) and its salt.
EXAMPLE: 6-[D-(-)-α-( 4-hydroxy-5-hydroxyimino-5,6,7,8-tetrahydroquinoline-3- carboxylamide)-phenylacetoamide]-penicillanic acid.
USE: An antibacterial agent. Useful as a drug for bacterially caused disease of a mammal and as a bactericide. Having a wide range of antibacterial spectacle and high antibacterial activity against gram-negative bacterium, especially against any bacterium of the genus pseudomonas.
PROCESS: An ampicillin shown by the formula II, its salt, or its reactive derivative is reacted with a reactive derivative shown by the formula III of quinolinecarboxylic acid, e.g., an acid halide, a mixed acid anhydride, an activated ester, etc. in a solvent, e.g., tetrahydrofuran, methylene dichloride to give a compound shown by the formula I.
