NEW MATERIAL:The compound of formula I (R is unsaturated or saturated, straight-chain or branched aliphatic hydrocarbon radical of 8W24 carbon atoms).
EXAMPLE: 1-O-methyl-branched-isostearyl-2-O-2'-,3'-dihydroxypropyl glycerol.
USE: The compound is chemically stable and little irritates skins, thus being suitable for use as an emulsifier, oil as an emollient, humectant or thickener.
PREPARATION: The reaction of a compound of formula II with allyl alcohol in the presence of an acid or alkali catalyst gives a compound of formula III, which is subjected to the Williamson type ether synthesis with an epihalohydrin to form a compound of formula IV. Then, an acid anhydride of the formula: (R'CO)2O (R' is 1W5C hydrocarbon) is added to the product, then the resultant compound of formula V is hydrolyzed, followed by deallylation of the compound of formula VI to give the compound of formula I .
