Abstract:
PURPOSE: To provide the novel polyphenol high in solubility in organic solvents and useful for various functional materials and resin materials.
CONSTITUTION: A polyphenol of the formula, e.g. 4,4'[(2-hydroxyphenol) methylene]bis[2-cyclohexyl-5-methylphenol]. The highly pure product of the compound is obtained by reacting hydroxybenzaldehyde with 3-methyl-6- cyclohexylphenol in the presence of an acid catalyst, preferably a liquid acid catalyst dissolved in an alcohol solvent at room temperature to 80°C, preferably 40-65°C, neutralizing the acid catalyst in the reaction solution containing the deposited polyphenol, adding a solvent mixture consisting of an aromatic hydrocarbon and an aliphatic ketone (e.g. toluene-methylisobutyl ketone) to the reaction solution to dissolve the polyphenol, and subsequently cooling the reaction solution to crystallize the polyphenol.
