NEW MATERIAL:The pyridine derivative of formula I [R and R' are independently 1W9C straight-chain alkyl; the group of formula II is group of formula III or formula IV; the configuration of cyclohexane ring is trans(equatorial- equatorial)].
USE: Useful as an electro-optical display material. It is a compound having weak positive dielectric anisotropy. It can be used as a material for dynamic light- scattering display cell in a state of a mixture with other nematic liquid crystal compound having negative dielectric anisotropy and as a material for field effect display cell in a state of a mixture with other nematic liquid crystal compound having positive dielectric anisotropy. The increase in the viscosity of the mixed liquid crystal can be suppressed within a narrow range by this process.
PREPARATION: The objective compound of formula I can be produced by reacting a compound of formula V with lithium, etc., catalytically reducing the resultant compound of formula VI and reacting and isomerizing the product (the compound of formula VII) with potassium t-butoxide.
