NEW MATERIAL:A compound of the formula [R1 is β-D-glucopyranosyl(1→6)-β- D-glucopyranosyl, α-L-arabinopyranosyl(1→6)-β,D-glucopyranosyl, α-L-arabinofuranosyl(1→6)-β-D-glucopyranosyl or β-D-glucopyranosyl].

EXAMPLE: 3-O-[6-O-Malonyl-β-D-glucopyranosyl ( 1→2 ) -β-D-glucopyranosyl]-20-O- [β-D-glucopyranosyl(1→6)-β-D-glucopyranosyl]20-S-protopanaxadiol.

USE: Effective for cell activators.

PREPARATION: For example, the root part, etc. of a ginseng is directly extracted with water, a lower alcohol or hydrous lower alcohol or defatted and then extracted therewith, and the resultant extract is distributed and extracted with water and an aliphatic ether and/or aliphatic medium alcohol.
