NEW MATERIAL:A compound of formulaI[R is group of formula II (R1 and R2 are H or lower alkyl) or formula III (R3 is H, alkyl, aryl, alkoxyl, halogen, cyano, carboxylic acid, solfonic acid, etc.)].
EXAMPLE: 4,4'-Bis(maleimidomethyl)-secalonic acid A.
USE: An antitumor agnet and an intermediate for preparing medicines with lower toxicity than the secalonic acid of formula IV.
PROCESS: The secalonic acid of formula IV is reacted with a compound of formula R-CH2OH to give the compound of formulaI. The reaction is a dehydration reaction between the compound of formula III with the compound of the formula R-CH2OH, and in the presence of an inorganic acid, e.g. concentrated solfuric acid or fuming sulfuric acid, or a dehydrating agent, e.g. zinc chloride or phosphorus pentoxide, or a catalyst. The amount of the compound of the formula R-CH2OH is in the range of 1W10mol, preferably 2W4mol, based on one mole compound of formula IV.
