PURPOSE: To provide novel steroid compounds containing a spiro group in the 17-position having progestomimetic activity and anti-estrogenic activity and useful in treating dysmenorrhea, sterility, breast cancer, uterine cancer, etc., and as a conception controlling agent, etc.
CONSTITUTION: Novel steroids compounds having a spiro group in the 17-position are compounds represented by formula I [wherein =X is a ketone functional group or a group of formula II (wherein R is H or 12≥C acyl; the wavy lines indicate that the substituents OR and H each can be in the α- or β-position); the dotted lines in the 9'(10')- and 11'(12')-positions indicate that a second optional double bond can be present in the 9'(10')-position or two optional double bonds can be present in the 9'(10')- and 11'(12')-positions and the dotted line at the 17-position indicates that the bond is in the α-position] in the form of 2R or 2S epimer or in a mixed form thereof [e.g. spiro(cyclopentane -1',17'-β-estra -4',9'-diene)-2,3'-dione or the like]. These compounds are obtained by reducing a compound of formula III and then, hydrolyzing the resulting compound.
