PURPOSE: To reduce adverse effect of a surfactant remaining after use in various applications by preparing the sulfuric ester type anionic surfactant with a compd. having methacryl group shown in a specified general formula.

CONSTITUTION: Both a raw material of alkylphenol such as nonylphenol and methacryl chloride are heated and allowed to react with each other under the existence of a catalyt and thereafter distilled at reduced pressure. Then after performing addition of alkylene oxide, this compd. is sulfated with a sulfating agent such as sulfuric acid and a surfactant consisting of the compd. shown in a formula I (R1 shows 4W18 C alkyl group, alkenyl group and aralkyl group, R2 shows H, 4W18C alkyl group, alkenyl group and aralkyl group, A shows 2W4C alkylene group, (n) shows integer of 1W200, M shows alkali metallic atom, NH4 and alkanol amine residual group).
