PURPOSE: To ensure economy and total safety by subjecting a spent fuel pin composed of a nitride of minor actinoid, etc., to fused salt electrolysis and converting the obtained high order nitride into a mononitride.
CONSTITUTION: A spent fuel pin containing oxides mixed with uranium/ plutonium, a nitride of minor actinoid, etc., is chopped and placed in a metal basket as the anode. A chloride of alkaline metal, e.g. Li, Na or K, is employed as a fused salt and fused salt electrolysis is conducted under specified conditions. A spherical cathode having a hole at the tip thereof is employed in the fused salt analysis and nitrogen gas is fed constantly into a tubular cathode rod thus converting the metal fuel and minor actinoid (MA) collected on the surface immediately into a high order nitride on the electrode. The mixture of powdery uranium/plutonium, MA high order nitride, and electrolysis salt taken out from an electrolytic bath is then added with water and separated before it is thermally dehydrated. Sesquinitride powder is then solated and granularly molded.
