An object information acquiring apparatus includes: the holding plate which holds the object; a probe which detects an acoustic wave propagated from the inside of the object irradiated with measurement light and converts the acoustic wave into an electric signal; an image processor which generates an image inside the object from the electric signal; a photodetector which detects light reflected by the peripheral part as a region that does not come into contact with the holding plate in the object; and a discerning means which discerns a contact state between the holding plate and the object using a detection result of the photodetector.
