To provide an observation data assimilation method and device capable of obtaining more highly precise estimation data in the vertical direction.
The mean standard deviation which shows mean magnitude of variation of observation data and the reference standard deviation to be used for determining the magnitude of the data variation in the vertical direction using the statistical data in the observation data obtained in a sea region are acquired. If the mean standard deviation is not more than reference standard deviation, the observation data of vertical direction is firstly interpolated, then the horizontal direction and time direction are interpolation processed for optimum interpolation using 3D optimum interpolation method. If the mean standard deviation is more than the reference standard deviation, the observation data is optimally interpolated in the horizontal direction, vertical direction and time direction using the 4D optimum interpolation method. The data obtained after application of 3D optimum interpolation or 4D optimum interpolation is assimilated to the data obtained from the numerical model.
