PURPOSE: To observe directly the surface of the braking material in friction by irradiating a prescribed place on the surface of the braking material by means of a stroboscopic light every time when the place comes to the spot of irradiation.
CONSTITUTION: A drum 1 is connected to a shaft 10 by a bolt 11 and rotated. A brake lining 3 which is a friction material is bonded to a brake shoe 4. In the friction surface of the drum 1 a perforating hole 2 is opened. When the cut part of a timing disc passes the part of a phototransistor and a light source 8, a pulse is generated. The stroboscopic light 5, triggered by the pulse, irradiates the same place of the brake lining 3 through the perforating hole 2. For detailed observation, a stereomicroscope 12 is employed.
