When detecting the obstacles around the vehicle, images from side to side around the vehicle are picked up by a CCD camera 11 for right side image pickup and a CCD camera 13 for left side image pickup, left side image and a right side image are produced, the left side video and the right side video are composed by a control unit 3, and the obstacles are detected from the synthetic video. In such a case, when composing the right side image and the left side image, image reading directions of a RAM 12 for right side image pickup and a RAM 14 for left side image pickup are inverted in the left side video and the right side video to perform mirror conversion of one side video from side to side within the image so that the obstacle moving directions in both the side images are made into the same direction.
