The occupant detection sensor D used for the vehicular safety system comprises an operation unit 44 to obtain the distance to an object Ob and the azimuth in which the object Ob is present based on the time from the transmission of the sound wave by a transmission element 10 to the reception of the sound wave by a reception element 30, and an occupant state recognition unit 45 to recognize the occupant state related to the necessity/non-necessity of the operation of an airbag 116 which is an occupant safety device of a front passenger seat 110 as a predetermined seat. The transmission element 10 consists of a sound wave generation element to generate the sound wave by giving the thermal shock to the air.
