Abstract:
PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a new octylcyclohexanol alkylene oxide adduct having a cyclohexane ring substituted at 2, 3 or 4-position of straight-chain octyl group, exhibiting excellent performance as a surfactant, having high biodegradability and producible by a simple method in high efficiency from a raw material easily available on an industrial scale. SOLUTION: The objective compound is expressed by formula I (R1 is H, methyl or ethyl; (a) and (b) are each 0-5 and a+b=5; c>=1) such as octylcyclohexanol ethylene oxide adduct. The compound of formula I can be produced by reacting a straight-chain octene with phenol in the presence of an acid catalyst to obtain octylphenol of formula II, reacting the compound with a 2-4C alkylene oxide in the presence of an alkoxylation catalyst and reacting the resultant octylphenol alkylene oxide adduct of formula III with hydrogen in the presence of a hydrogenation catalyst.
