Abstract:

PURPOSE: To obtain tumor cell proliferation inhibitor that has antitumor activity and no hemolytic action. CONSTITUTION: This tumor cell proliferation inhibitor contains, as an active ingredient, a furostanol steroidal saponin of' formula I (R1 is formula II, R2 is formula II, R3 is OH or OCH3 , R4 is H or OH). Among the compounds of formula I, the compounds where R3 is OCH3 , R4 is OH are unknown. The compound of formula I is obtained by extracting the whole plant of Y. thibetica, concentrating the extract and purifying the residue by a proper separation process as column chromatography. The kinds and sites of tumors against which this inhibitor is effective are not limited in particular, but this drug is effective against skin cancer, uterine cancer, liver cancer, lung cancer, pharyngeal cancer or pancreatic cancer and the like.
