To provide an operating method of an internal combustion engine equipped with a fuel injection system adapting an over-rich stage and a lean stage to an actual condition in an NOx occlusion catalyst about aging, temperature, and the like, and including a heating method excellently avoiding passing in a combustion state through the catalyst.
In the operating method of the internal combustion engine equipped with a fuel injection system, an over-rich combustion stage and/or a lean combustion stage are generated in circulation between heating by the catalyst. The length and/or strength of the over-rich combustion stage and/or the lean combustion stage is decided by an oxygen sensor disposed behind and/or between the catalysts in exhaust gas flow, in the exhaust gas flow behind the catalyst. Constant λas time average is adjusted by adapting the time length of each stage, adjusting amplitude of an air/fuel ratio, and/or separation controlling of each stage.
