Abstract:

To suppress the occurrence of knocking or misfire even if an air-fuel ratio deviates from target value in premixed compression self-ignition combustion operation at a target air-fuel ratio corresponding to a request load and engine rotation speed.

A control device grasps an air-fuel ratio to determine whether or not premixed compression self-ignition combustion operation can be executed on the basis of a map indicating relationship between EVC and an air-fuel ratio at which stable premixed compression self-ignition combustion can be achieved. If the air-fuel ratio shows fluctuations which have the possibility of causing misfire, the EVC is adjusted so as to be retarded on the basis of the map. If the air-fuel ratio shows fluctuations which have the possibility of causing knocking, the EVC is adjusted so as to be advanced on the basis of the map.
