PURPOSE: To make intentional release of operation of a safety mechanism unavailable in an operating method for a sensor provided in a safety mechanism.
CONSTITUTION: This is an operating method for a sensor installed in a safety mechanism provided with a sensor 1 comprising a light emitting element 1a and a light receiving element 1b. The light emitting element 1a is located at one end of a protective member 2 where it can be opened and closed artificially, and the light receiving element 1b is located at a stopper 3 which stops softly the protective member 2 when it is closed so that the light emitting element 1a is opposed to the light receiving element 1b. A pulse light 4 with a specified frequency is emitted by the light emitting element 1a and, when the protective member 2 is closed, it is detected that the protective member 2 is closed only when the light receiving element 1b receives the pulse light 4.
