In an operation control device 100 for an escalator E, a plurality of steps 1 are connected in an endless manner, the presence/absence of an opening caused by the come-off of the step 1 of the escalator E (passenger conveyor) traveling between upper and lower platforms is diagnosed, and the traveling is controlled on the basis of the diagnosis result. The operation control device comprises a start torque calculation part 8 for calculating drive torque at a start of the escalator E, and an opening presence/absence diagnosis part 9 for diagnosing the presence/absence of a step opening from conditions of a value of the drive torque at the start and an operation direction. When it is diagnosed that there is the opening, the present position of the opening is notified by a notification means.
