To provide an operation observation system superior in observational performance, by eliminating flickering of an image when superposing and displaying a white light observation image and a special light observation image.
The white light observation image and the special light observation image of an observation object part are alternately formed by control of a timing generator 38, and are outputted to memories 30 and 34 and image synthesizing circuits 31 and 35 in real time. The memories 30 and 34 record the received white light observation image or special light observation image, and output an image recorded just before to the image synthesizing circuits 31 and 35 every time when receiving a signal from the timing generator 38. The white light observation image received in real time by the image synthesizing circuits 31 and 35, the recorded special light observation image outputted from the memories 30 and 34 or the special light observation image received in real time and the recorded white light observation image outputted from the memories 30 and 34, are superposed and displayed on an image display means 6.
