To provide a low cost, easily washable and highly reliably spiral type membrane element, and a method for operating a spiral type membrane module.
The spiral type membrane element 1 is constituted by covering a spiral shaped membranes element consisting of a plurality of independent or continuous envelope-like membranes wound in the outer peripheral surface of a water collection tube 2 via raw water spacers with a separation membrane, and further covering the resultant assembly with an outer peripheral part flow path material. The raw water 51 with air bubbles generated with a diffuser 102 is fed to the spiral type membrane element 1 in a pressure container 10. A portion of the raw water in the raw water 51 flows in the axis direction along the outer peripheral part of the spiral type membrane element 1, and is discharged from a raw water outlet 15 of the pressure container 10, and is then returned to a raw water tank 200 via a piping 17a.
