Abstract:
PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical amplifier with a gain control function utilizing supervisory control signal light whose wavelength is set without being restricted in an amplification band so as to dynamically compensate an abrupt fluctuation in the transmission loss.
SOLUTION: A PD (Photo Diode) 7 detects an auxiliary signal light (λm) for gain control generated by an LD (Laser Diode) 4 within the amplification band of an optical amplifier section 9 via a variable optical attenuator 5 and a 13 dB photocoupler 6 and outputs the light to a control electric circuit 3. The control electric circuit 3 regulates the attenuation in the variable optical attenuator 5 so that the optical level of the auxiliary signal light (λm) given from the 13 dB photocoupler 6 to a WDM (Wavelength Division Multiplex) photocoupler 8 is nearly equal to the optical level of main signal light (λ1 to λn) given from a WDM photocoupler 1 to the WDM photocoupler 8 on the basis of the optical level of signal light (λs) for monitoring and controlling input detected by a PD 2.
