To find out a film manufacturing method capable of efficiently controlling the retardation in the thickness direction of a transparent film support small with respect to the average of the in-plane retardation thereof to obtain an inexpensive high performance optical anisotropic film by coating the produced film with a liquid crystal layer to orient the coated film and to provide a liquid crystal display apparatus using the optical anisotropic film.
An optical anisotropic film is constituted by providing at least one liquid crystal oriented film and at least one liquid crystal layer on a film support comprising fatty acid cellulose ester having a 2-3C acyl group and there is a relation represented by formula: (nx+ny)/2-nz>α between the in- plane refractive index nx in the x-direction, the refractive index ny in the y- direction and the refractive index nz in the thickness direction of the cellulose ester film support.
