PURPOSE: To reduce the cost required for the formation, assembly, and adjustment of an optical element by composing a beam splitter of an air layer and molding a main body which surrounds the beam splitter and lenses provided on the incidence and projection sides of the beam splitter in one body.
CONSTITUTION: Light guided in an optical branching element from an optical fiber 41 through a lens 61 is branched by the beam splitter 5 in two directions. Here, the incident light is branched equally in quantity toward lenses 62 and 63 by setting the incidence angle θ to 36.7°. The main body 6 of the optical branching element, the lens 61 provided on the incidence side for the light, and the lenses 62 and 63 provided on the projection side are molded integrally out of the same plastic materials, and the beam splitter 5 is hollow and composed of the air layer. Consequently, the cost required for the formation, assembly, and adjustment of the optical element is reduced and the price of the optical branching element is drastically lowered.
