Title:
OPTICAL COMPENSATION ELEMENT AND PRODUCTION THEREOF
Document Type and Number:
Japanese Patent JPH04139402
Kind Code:
A
Abstract:
PURPOSE:To provide an excellent optical compensation effect by forming an ion-contg. high polymer as a material, forming this material as a sheet shape, and setting the refractive index in the direction perpendicular to the sheet surface smaller than the refractive index in the intra-surface direction of the sheet. CONSTITUTION:The optical compensation element is formed by using the sheet 11 consisting of the ion-contg. high polymer. An ionomer resin is preferably used as the ion-contg. high polymer. This ionomer has the structure that at least a part of the carboxyl groups of an ethylene/unsatd. carboxylic acid copolymer are neutralized with metal ions. After this ion-contg. high-polymer sheet 11 is stretched in the intra- surface one direction, the sheet is inserted between two sheets of parallel glass plates 13 and 14 and the laminate is housed into a heat resistant hermetic bag 17 which can be evacuated. The inside of the bag is evacuated to a vacuum and the bag is housed in an autoclave furnace and is subjected to heating and pressurizing treatments, by which the optical compensation element having the refractive index in the direction perpendicular to the sheet surface smaller than the refractive index in the intra-surface direction and negative optical anisotropy is formed. The optical anisotropy of the liquid crystal cell is efficiently compensated in this way.
