Abstract:
PURPOSE:To eliminate the need for an additional component such as the O/E module of an optical switch part by integrating and manufacturing a thyristor or phototransistor structure which is driven to switch an optical path by using electron positive hole couples absorbed by a control photosensitive part on a substrate integrally with an optical waveguide. CONSTITUTION:The control photosensitive part 4 made of a semiconductor material of composition with the wavelength of control light below absorption end wavelength is provided on part of the core layers 16 of optical waveguides 2 and 3 of a semiconductor optical switch and the thyristor or phototransistor structure manufactured by integrating the optical waveguides 2 and 3 by utilizing electron and positive hole couples generated with control light absorbed by the control photosensitive part 4 is driven to switch the optical path of the optical switch. Here, a lower electrode 18 grounded to the reverse surface of the substrate 1, a gate electrode 19, and an anode electrode 20 are biased to make a layer structure in a figure (b) function as a thyristor. Consequently, a transmission line which sends the control signal of the optical switch is used in common as an optical transmission line for signal light, and the need for the additional component such as the O/E module of the optical switch part is eliminated.
