To provide an optical disc control method whereby control data peculiar to discs can be given to the discs, without using a marking press.
An optical disc control method applied to this system is such that in initializing phase change type optical discs D1-D3, control data peculiar to the discs are given not so as to be erased in the data recording after initialization. The light intensity of an initializing laser beam is varied or its irradiation is intermitted to record the control data as a variation of the reflectivity of specified patterns a-c in the diametral or circumferential directions over data recording regions De of the discs D1-D3. In scanning over the discs after initialization, the variation of the reflected light quantity corresponding to the variation of the reflectivity of the patterns a-c is detected from reflected lights obtained from the data recording regions De, and the control data peculiar to the discs being scanned are read from the detected specified patterns a-c.
