Each of a first polarizing separation element 71 and a second polarizing separation element 73 reflects either of two polarizing components included in incident light and crossing mutually and orthogonally and transmits the other of them. A switching element 72 is inserted between the first polarizing separation element 71 and the second polarizing separation element 73 and switches between a first state for transmitting an incident polarizing component as it is and a second state for converting the incident polarizing component into a polarizing component crossing it orthogonally and transmitting it.
