Title:
OPTICAL FIBER COUPLER
Document Type and Number:
Japanese Patent JPH02125207
Kind Code:
A
Abstract:
PURPOSE:To obtain the wide-band optical fiber coupler which is easily manufactured and has low insertion loss by fusing and drawing parts of two optical fibers which are >=15% different in specific refractive index different and thus forming a fusion-drawn part. CONSTITUTION:The two optical fibers 12 and 13 whose specific refractive index differences are >=15% different are fused and drawn to constitute the fusion- drawn part 14, and consequently a difference in propagation constant is generated between the optical fibers 12 and 13. When the relative difference in specific refractive index is >=15%, the optical fibers 12 and 13 are fused and drawn to obtain the practical degree (5-50%) of coupling as a wide-band coupler, but when the specific refractive index difference is <15% relatively, the practical degree of coupling becomes hard to obtain. Consequently, a sufficient propagation constant difference is obtained by equalizing the diameters of the optical fibers 12 and 13 to obtain the wide-band coupler which has the desired degree of coupling.
