Abstract:
PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing an optical fiber containing a plurality of cavities extending in a fiber axis direction at high yield and low cost.SOLUTION: The optical fiber production process comprises a glass rod production step to produce a glass rod 10, a preform production step to insert the glass rod 10 into a jacket tube 20 to produce an optical fiber preform, and a drawing step to produce the optical fiber by drawing the optical fiber preform. In the preform production step, the glass rod 10 is inserted into the jacket tube 20, a jacket tube inner space 21 between the glass rod 10 and the jacket tube 20 is sealed at a first end side 41, and a heat source is moved from the first end side 41 to a second end side 42 while evacuating the jacket tube inner space 21 from the second end side 42 to selectively collapse the jacket tube 20 and produce the optical fiber preform.
