To provide an optical fiber for Raman amplification which can amplify signal light with high efficiency and suppress deterioration in the waveform of the signal light due to the influence of a nonlinear optical phenomenon, and makes large the degree of freedom of design for an optical fiber transmission line and a Raman amplifier.
The Raman amplifier 10 is equipped with an optical fiber coil 110 formed by stacking and winding the optical fiber 100 for Raman amplifier and an exciting light source 120 which outputs exciting light for Raman amplifier to be supplied to the optical fiber coil 110. The optical fiber 100 for Raman amplification is characterized by that the absolute value of wavelength dispersion at signal line wavelength is 6 to 20 ps/nm/km, the effective sectional area Aeff is ≤20 μm2, and the Raman gain coefficient GR/Aeff is ≥0.005 (W.m)-1. Or the absolute value of wavelength dispersion at the signal light wavelength is 6 to 20 ps/nm/km and the effective sectional area Aeff is <15 μm2.
