Abstract:
PURPOSE:To relax the limitations of an input light signal to light intensity and to connecting many stages of optical flip-flops by inputting light signals to two tandem electrode laser diodes independently and making the intensity of the input light signals only exceed a larger threshold value. CONSTITUTION:Two tandem electrode laser diodes which have optical bistable characteristics are used and variation in the end voltage of the gain area or saturable absorption area of one tandem electrode laser diode 1, i.e. the difference between the terminal voltage in oscillating operation and terminal voltage in nonoscillating operation is detected. Further, a bias current applied to the saturable absorption area or gain area of the other tandem electrode laser diode 2 is varied to control the both so that when one tandem electrode laser diode 1 is in an oscillation state, the other 2 is not in the oscillation state. Therefore, the intensity of an input signal need not be controlled within the narrow range between two threshold values. Consequently, the limitations of the input light signal to the light intensity are relaxed and the optical flip-flops can be connected in many stages.
