Abstract:

To provide an optical modulator which can develop superior photonic crystallinity characteristics and can operate at a high speed, by improving the structure of the modulator.

An optical functional device 1 is equipped with a slab type two-dimensional photonic crystal layer 29 which has a dielectric layer 4, a plurality of lattice columns 5 each comprising dielectric pillars, and a waveguide portion 6 formed therein; a grounding electrode 8 and a signal electrode 9 formed on the dielectric layer 4 for applying a modulation voltage on the light propagating in the waveguide portion 6; a layer 2 of a high dielectric constant laminated on the dielectric layer; and a portion 3 of a low dielectric constant, toward which the waveguide portion 6 and a lattice column 7C, separated from the waveguide portion 6 by at least the third column, face.
