Abstract:

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To simplify manufacturing processes and to realize stable operation by performing hybrid integration of a plurality of nonlinear optical waveguide elements and a quartz optical waveguide with small connection loss through a small number of steps for manufacturing process.
SOLUTION: A lithium niobate (LiNbO3) optical waveguide 108 having a domain-inverted structure is used as a nonlinear optical switch and glass waveguides 105 and 110 are joined with an input/output end of the optical waveguide 108 to realize functions of receiving, branching, and coupling signal light and clock light needed for modulation and multiplexing and making timing adjustments. A nonlinear medium while generating 2nd higher harmonic light of the clock pulse light generates light corresponding to the difference frequency between the generated 2nd higher harmonic light and signal pulse light as an output.
