Abstract:
PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical modulation element capable of electrically driving with size suitable for a pixel and performing gradation display.SOLUTION: An optical modulation element 1 is obtained by laminating an insulation film 2 and a magnetic layer 3 having perpendicular magnetic anisotropy. When voltage is applied vertically to a boundary face between the magnetic layer 3 and the insulation film 2, a magnetization direction of the magnetic layer 3 changes to a non-vertical direction and it approaches an in-plane direction more as the voltage is larger. The optical modulation element 1 emits light Lmade nearly vertically incident while changing a polarization direction at the maximum angle of rotation θwhen voltage is not being applied, emits the same while decreasing an angle of rotation θaccording to the magnitude of voltage Vwhen the voltage is being applied, and emits the same without changing a polarization direction when voltage Vof a predetermined value or larger is applied.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 2
