Abstract:
PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical modulator capable of suppressing fluctuations in an operation point with respect to temperature changes in each optical modulation portion and suppressing increase in a difference in Δbias among the optical modulation portions.SOLUTION: The optical modulator includes a substrate 1-2 having an electro-optic effect, an optical waveguide 1 formed in the substrate, and control electrodes 2-1 to 2-3, 3-1 to 3-2 for applying an electric field to the optical waveguide, in which stress relaxing means is disposed in a part of the control electrodes to suppress concentration of a stress caused by the difference in a coefficient of thermal expansion between the control electrode and the substrate into a specific portion. When a ground electrode constituting the control electrode is continuously formed in a predetermined area or more, a slit 5 for intercepting the continuity of the ground electrode is disposed as the stress relaxing means in the ground electrode; and when the control electrode is unevenly present on the substrate, a dummy ground electrode 6 is formed as the stress relaxing means in a portion lacking the control electrode.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 6
