Title:
OPTICAL MODULATOR
Document Type and Number:
Japanese Patent JPH045615
Kind Code:
A
Abstract:
PURPOSE:To utilize one light source effectively by both transmission part and reception part by providing the optical modulator with a reflection part which reflects only part of light. CONSTITUTION:Incident light is made incident on a basic mode optical waveguide 2 which is formed on a crystal substrate 1, distributed into two by a Y-branch waveguide 3, and branched to branch waveguides A and B respectively. The branch light beams are shifted in phase with an electric field applied onto the parallel waveguides by electrodes 6. The light beams after being shifted in phase are reflected partially by a reflection part 4 provided on the projection end surface of crystal and further shifted in phase by passing through the parallel waveguides applied with the electric field to reach the Y-branch path 3. Then the branch light beams interfere with each other at the Y-branch point 3, and when the two branch light beams are in phase with each other, they are guided to the single-mode optical waveguide as it is, but when they cross each other in opposite-phase relation, the light beams enter radiation mode and are emitted out of the waveguide. Therefore, intensity modulation is imposed on the reflected light beams respectively with the phase-modulating electric field.
