To obtain an optical modulator which is small-sized and simple in constitution and also easy in high-speed modulation.
An optical fiber 12 on which light is made incident from a light source 14 has its intermediate part fixed onto a base 16 and a transducer 18 is fitted to its unfixed part on the opposite side from the light source 14. When the unfixed part is not displaced, the optical axis of projection light from the optical fiber 12 is aligned with the optical axis (reference optical axis) of a lens 20, but when an electric signal is inputted and the transducer 18 deforms, a stress is applied to the unfixed part and the optical fiber 12 curves to cause the optical axis of the projection light to deviates, so that the light projected from the lens 20 along the reference optical axis decreases in intensity. Therefore, the voltage level of the electric signal is varied and then the intensity of the light projected from the lens 20 along the reference optical axis can be modulated in timing with the variation of the voltage level.
