Title:
OPTICAL MODULATOR
Document Type and Number:
Japanese Patent JPS64927
Kind Code:
A
Abstract:
PURPOSE:To prevent the degradation in a display grade even if a liquid crystal injection groove is used for display and to enable always good observation by setting the injection groove at such a width at which said groove is invisible to a part through a non-diffraction grating region up to a diffraction grating region. CONSTITUTION:The non-diffraction grating 14 is formed of the same material as the material of the diffraction grating 15 at approximately the same height as the grating height of the diffraction grating in a region off the diffraction grating region to eliminate a difference between refractive indices. The injection groove 14a is formed in a part of the non-diffraction grating region and the liquid crystal is injected into the grating grooves of the diffraction grating 15. The width of the injection groove 14 is set at such a size at which said groove is invisible when the groove is used for display, for example, at <=200mum, more preferably <=100mum. The refractive index of the liquid crystal and the refractive index of the non-diffraction grating 14 are thus approximately equaled in such a manner and the injection groove 14a is formed at such width at which the injection groove is not visible when used for display and, therefore, the display grade is improved.
