To obtain an optical part useful for optical recording medium substrate, optical lens, etc., excellent in transparency, mechanical strength and heat resistance and low in double refraction, by using an aromatic polycarbonate containing a specific structural unit.
For this optical part, (A) an aromatic polycarbonate containing ≥5mol%, preferably ≥20mol% of a structural unit derived from (A1) a compound of the formula (R is methyl or phenyl), is used. The component A is obtained, for example, by reacting the component A1 and optionally the component A1 and another aromatic dihydroxy compound [e.g. a bis(hydroxyaryl) alkane] with a polycarbonate precursor such as a halogenated carbonyl compound, a haloformate compound or a carboxylic acid diester.
