PURPOSE: To allow a single pickup device to reproduce plural kinds of discs whose protection layer thickness differs from each other and to easily discriminate the plural kinds of discs whose protection layer thickness differs from each other.
CONSTITUTION: A spherical aberration correction means 6 of the pickup device 1 is inserted into/withdrawn from an optical path between a light source 2 and an objective lens 9 based on an external optical recording medium discrimination signal SD. The single pickup device conducts optimum reproduction by correcting spherical aberration different from each other for every optical recording medium. Furthermore, since an optical recording medium discrimination device 12 discriminates each optical recording medium based on a voltage corresponding to a current flowing to a focus coil nearly at a focal point, each of the plural kinds of optical recording media in which a distance from the surface of each optical recording medium to an information recording face differs from each other is easily discriminated.
