To obtain an optical recording medium having an organic coloring matter layer containing a benzopyran compound expressed by a specific formula, and capable of forming good fine optical recording portions substantially free from a rim, and small in the jitter of a bit length.
This optical recording medium for recording or regenerating information with a laser ray having a wavelength of 620-690nm is obtained by disposing an organic coloring matter layer containing a benzopyran compound expressed by formula I [R1 and R2 are each a (substituted) alkyl, a cycloalkyl, an aryl, etc.; (X) is H, an alkyl, an alkoxy, a halogen, cyano, etc.; (Y) is an oxygen atom, a sulfur atom, etc.; the ring A is an aromatic carbocyclic group or an aromatic heterocyclic group which may be substituted] on a substrate (e.g. a polycarbonate substrate). The compound is preferably a compound expressed by formula II (R3 and R4 are each a 1-12 alkyl; R5 is an oxygen atom, a nitrogen atom, etc.; R6 and R7 are each H, an alkyl, an alkoxy, etc.), e.g. a compound of formula III.
