Abstract:

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To optically resolve carboxylic acids having an asymmetric carbon at α-position by using 1S,3R,4R,6R-carane-3,4-diol.
SOLUTION: A carboxylic acid having an asymmetric carbon at α-position or its reactive derivative (e.g. cis-2,2-dimethyl-3-(2-methyl-1-propenyl) cyclopropane carboxylic acid) is subjected to esterifying reaction together with 1S,3R,4R,6R-carane-3,4-diol of formula I to obtain a diastereomer mixture of an ester compound of formula II (R is a residue after removed of a carboxyl in a carboxylic acid having an asymmetric carbon at α-position). The mixture is separated to respective diastereomer by chromatography or a priority crystallization, etc., and one or each of the resultant diastereomer is hydrolyzed to perform an optical resolution. The resultant optically active carboxylic acid having an asymmetric carbon at α-position is useful as an anti-inflammatory agent, an insecticide, a herbicide or their synthetic intermediate, and an optical resolving agent.
