Title:
OPTICAL STATIONARY ATTENUATOR
Document Type and Number:
Japanese Patent JP3140114
Kind Code:
B2
Abstract:

PURPOSE: To enable the easy production of the above attenuator even with an ordinary optical fiber alone with high accuracy and to obtain high strength by heating the microrange of a bare optical fiber to soften and compressing this part in an optical axis direction.
CONSTITUTION: The diameter in the microrange of the bare optical fiber 1 can be concentrically increased if this range is softened by heating and is compressed in the optical axis direction. Then, the bare optical fiber 1 consisting of a clad 2 from which a coating part is removed and a core 3 has an oval shape concentrically increased in diameter in the heated and compressed part 4 of this microrange. The fiber has a slightly curving part 3a therein. The slightly curving part 3a is formed by microbending having many very small radii of curvature and the light propagating in the core 3 is attenuated as power is radiated uniformly from this microbending. A desired attenuation quantity is thus obtd.
