To provide an optical submarine relay unit and its connecting method which is excellent in assemblability with less number of screws to connect metal cylinders to each other, and has accurate positioning function.
After the connecting recess 14 of one metal cylinder 12 is butted against end of a connecting protruding portion 13 of the other metal cylinder 12, both the cylinders 12 are rotated and a protrusion 15 of the connecting protruding portion 13 is engaged with a nearly L-shaped groove 19 of the connecting recess 14, respectively. In this case, the connecting protruding portion 13 is pushed toward the connecting recess 14, and the protrusion 15 is advanced into advancing portion 19a of the L-shaped groove 19. When the protrusion 15 bumps into the bottom of the advancing portion 19a, the cylinder 12 on the connecting protruding portion 13 side is rotated by about 5° with respect to the cylinder 12 on the connecting recess 14 side. In this case, the protrusion 15 is accommodated in the accommodation portion 19b, both the cylinders 12 are positioned at the position where the protrusion 15 abuts against the innermost wall face of the accommodation part 19b, both the metal cylinders 12 are fixed by screws while keeping this state.
