Abstract:
PURPOSE:To obtain the optical fiber which is reduced in size suitably and able to function as an optical amplifier, an optical modulator, etc., without having any interposed electric circuit by forming a groove in a coupling part and providing a resonance part composed of a nonlinear coupling area and a reflecting mirror in the groove. CONSTITUTION:The optical switch 1 is equipped with the optical waveguide where two branch lines 5 and 6 and the coupling part 2 where the branch lines 5 and 6 cross each other are formed. The groove 2a is formed at part of the coupling part 2 of the optical waveguide and the resonance part consisting of the nonlinear coupling area 3 and reflecting mirror 4 is provided in the groove 2a. Thus, the resonance part is only provided in the groove formed in the coupling part 2 of the optical waveguide, so the constitution is simple and suits for the size reduction. Further, the resonance part amplifies a light signal, so the switch is enabled to function as the optical amplifier. Further, when signal light is made incident from one of the branch lines 5 and 6 and exciting light is made incident from the other, the nonlinear coupling area 3 of the resonance part varies in light refractive index and the resonance part shifts in resonance mode, so the signal light can be switched or modulated optically with the exciting light.
